Good news for Android App Developers: Multiple APK support coming to Android Market
Jul 25, 2011 Android updates
It’s almost been 2 weeks since Google announced the number of Android Device activations. Google has now revealed its new offering to help Android app developers manage their apps more effectively in Android Market – Multiple APK support.
Multiple APK support allows Android developers have extra control over their app distribution. Previously, developers could upload only a single APK and only one version avaible for download for an Android app or game. However now, they can upload multiple versions of an APK for a single product listing, with each one addressing a different subset of their customers.
“These APKs are complete, independent APKs that share the same package name, but contain code and resources to target different Android platform versions, screen sizes, or GL texture-compression formats. When users download or purchase your app, Android Market chooses the right APK to deliver based on the characteristics of the device.”
With single application listing, developers will have multiple versions to target Android phones and tablets. This will be most beneficial when new platforms become available and developers would want to test or try their Android app without any change to their current customers or user base.
“Multiple APK support gives you a variety of ways to control app distribution. For example, you could use it to create separate APKs for phones and tablets under the same product listing. You could also use it to take advantage of new APIs or new hardware capabilities without impacting your existing customer base.”
Developers can access this right away. Google has updated the Developer Console to include controls for uploading and managing APKs in a product listing.

FriendCaster Tab update available in the Android Market
Jul 20, 2011 Android updates
When FriendCaster Tab was initially released in the Android Marketplace, it was missing quite a few features of Facebook. Termed as “Honeycomb’s first Facebook app”, it offered basic access to facebook but users were quite disappointed by the lack of features. Android developers have been hard at work to enhance the features of FriendCaster Tab and now the new version is now available in the Android Market.
This app uses fragments in Honeycomb but looks similar to the iphone version. The updated app is similar to the phone version, but consumes Fragments in Honeycomb. In this version you can easily access your News feed, profile, friend’s list, inlane photos, checking and pages as it uses tabbed browsing system. You can also login with multiple accounts. But this update does not include a Honeycomb widget like the previous version.

Good news for Android Developers, Android 3.2 SDK is finally released!
Jul 19, 2011 Android updates
For the past few weeks we have seen trails of breadcrumbs of Android 3.2. And now Google has finally made it official! Android app developers have access to the Android 3.2 Honeycomb SDK.
We previously had a sneak peak at the new version of Android 3.2 which would allow android developers and users to easily adjust the operating system to the different screen sizes used in Android-based tablets. In an earlier blog post by Scott Main. lead tech writer of Android developers blog, we had been introduced to the new feature “compatibility display mode” which allows users to zoom in to fit a tablet’s screen.
In his blog post Main said “When the user enables this new screen compatibility mode, the system no longer resizes your layout to fit the screen. Instead, it runs your app in an emulated normal/mdpi screen (approximately 320dp x 480dp) and scales that up to fill the screen—imagine viewing your app at the size of a phone screen then zooming in about 200%.”
With Android 3.2 users can load data from their SD card directly from the card to use them in Android apps. Android developers would be happy to know that the new version offers an extended screen support API that provides developers “more precise control over their UI across the range of Android-powered devices.”
