How to protect your Android Device from Malware
Jul 2, 2012 Android Development Resources
With thousands of apps in the Google Play Store, it’s quite a task to identify the good apps from the ones which could infect your phone. There may be a few applications which look fishy but many of the others look quite ordinary and it would not be easy to identify them as malware.
Here are a few steps which can be taken as precautions before downloading an Android application.
• Research the publisher/developer of the app. Visit developer’s website and also browse through the other applications which have been developed by them.
• Check out the reviews the app has received from other users and app review websites. Though some of the reviews in the Google Play Store might not be authentic, it will prove to be a bit helpful.
• Do not download an application from an unofficial and untrusted source such as forums or third part websites. The best way to be safe is to download apps from official sources such as Amazon AppStore, Google Play, App Brain and other such sources.
• Most importantly, download Android Package files (APKs) from trusted sources only. If you find that the source looks a little suspicious, avoid downloading the APKs.
• Always read the app permissions. If you find anything fishy, such as a simple app requesting to access contacts or your messages, then you need to stay away from such apps.
• Download an antivirus application for your phone and update the antivirus software regularly. Some antivirus apps which you can consider using as protection for your Android phone are AVG Antivirus, Norton Security and Antivirus, Lookout Security & Antivirus, NetQin Security & Anti-virus.

Android Training- New Android Tutorial Class From Google To Sharpen Development Skills
Dec 27, 2011 Android Development Resources
A new Android tutorial program has been launched by Google to help new Android developers develop quality applications.
Google has named this new venture- Android Training and has been designed for new as well as for old developers to enhance their skills and learn best practices for solving Android problems.
In Android Developers blog, Reto Meier, Android Developer Relations Tech Lead, said that program, which is currently in beta, will help developers tackle problems like designing effective navigation, optimizing battery life and managing audio playback. Google plans to add more classes to the program in the future.
“Each class explains the steps required to solve a problem, or implement a feature, with plenty of code snippets and sample code for you to use within your own apps,” Meier wrote on the blog.
For now, the Android Training has 11 different sections, including “developing for enterprise”, “optimizing battery life”, and “monetizing your app” while some of the topics are design related (designing for multiple screens, improving layout performance, designing effective navigation).
This is another step taken by Google to attract more developers towards Android, because a recent study has shown developers are more inclined to iOS, with almost half of them planning to make Apple apps in the following year.

Android Market gets new Update, Email developer and Filtered User Reviews
Dec 12, 2011 Android Development Resources
Google has introduced quite a few updates in the Android market off late with one of them being Email Developer. Android users can now directly contact developers with questions related to the application or report bugs directly. The link is a simple mailto link and a user can send an email even without signing in. The only disadvantage to this is that this could lead to a lot of spam mailers to the recipient.
The Android market has released another update which allows users to filter reviews based on
- Device Model
- App Version
- Filter apps by Star Ratings
Users can combine the filters based on your requirements; for example, you could search for poor rating on a Samsung Galaxy S2. Google has done wonders by introducing this feature into the Android Market. Users can now view reviews based on their device model.
