Good news for Android App Developers: Multiple APK support coming to Android Market

It’s almost been 2 weeks since Google announced the number of Android Device activations. Google has now revealed its new offering to help Android app developers manage their apps more effectively in Android Market – Multiple APK support.

Multiple APK support allows Android developers have extra control over their app distribution.  Previously, developers could upload only a single APK and only one version avaible for download for an Android app or game. However now, they can upload multiple versions of an APK for a single product listing, with each one addressing a different subset of their customers.

“These APKs are complete, independent APKs that share the same package name, but contain code and resources to target different Android platform versions, screen sizes, or GL texture-compression formats. When users download or purchase your app, Android Market chooses the right APK to deliver based on the characteristics of the device.”

With single application listing, developers will have multiple versions to target Android phones and tablets. This will be most beneficial when new platforms become available and developers would want to test or try their Android app without any change to their current customers or user base.

“Multiple APK support gives you a variety of ways to control app distribution. For example, you could use it to create separate APKs for phones and tablets under the same product listing. You could also use it to take advantage of new APIs or new hardware capabilities without impacting your existing customer base.”

Developers can access this right away. Google has updated the Developer Console to include controls for uploading and managing APKs in a product listing.

iOS Vs Android: Report reveals Enterprise user’s preference.

Mobile device management services, Good Technology has released a report Device Activation Report of Q2 2011. Good Technology analyzed activations across thousands of corporate and government customers from April 1 through June 30, 2011.

The report shows that iPad drives iOS dominance among Enterprise users. Even among Smartphone device activations, iOS Tablets share of overall net activations outnumbered Android Smartphone activations for the first time with iOS clearly in the lead with 27.2% compared to Android’s 24 percent.  In this quarter, there was a slight decline of 3.1 percent in overall Android Tablet Activations.

Among the Top Ten Devices, Apple’s iOS devices were the major players. iPhone 4 was the most popular device with activations growing steadily at 22%. Android devices including Motorola Droid2 Global, Motorola Droid X, HTC EVO 4G, HTC Incredible HD Devices totally comprised around 2% of device activations.

While comparing Activations across platforms, iOS again had the upper hand with 75 percent of activations and Android activations being just 25 percent. Though the Android Market share has been increasing, enterprise users prefer iOS phones and Tablets. Good Technology had previously predicted that Android Activations would over iPhone activations in this quarter. However with the present report, for Q3, 2011, they predict iOS to finish as strong as it started off in Q2, 2011.
